Introduction
Stephen Birrell (SNB) is a surgical oncologist with diverse professional and research interests in breast oncology, biotechnology, laboratory, and clinical research.
Over his 40-year career he has founded and directed several novel clinical and industry activities and has an extensive IP portfolio covering diverse areas of women’s health.
However, despite this diverse career SNB has maintained his over 30-year relationship with as a Clinical A/Prof with Prof Wayne Tilley and the Dame Roma Mitchell Cancer Laboratories (DRMCRL) and The University of Adelaide at the International, domestic and community levels. This collaboration has allowed direct translational focus of the DRMCRL where SNB has provided both educational support to the research staff and direct access to clinical material. This latter activity resulted in SNB helping develop an extremely successful patient derived breast cancer tumour model that has been of foundational support to DRMCRL to achieve high quality publications, including publications in Nature and Nature Medicine. His publications have been cited more than 3500 times.
Dr. Stephen Birrell established HAVAH Therapeutics in 2007, a biopharmaceutical company specializing in the development of hormonal therapeutics for women's health. HAVAH Therapeutics has invented a Novel Drug Device Combination of hormone medicine (T+Ai™) that aims to treat High Breast Density (HBD) and prevent breast cancer. This innovative approach is using products that are approved by both the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) combined in a unique commercial delivery system. The clinical results and studies demonstrate that a group of high-risk women experienced a significant reduction in breast cancer risk over a 10-year period, while maintaining an excellent safety profile and a as it is a subcutaneous implant it has 100% compliance rate
Consultant positions
Surgeons must also manage pre-operative, post-operative, and potential surgical candidates in the hospital wards. In some centers, anesthesiology is part of the division of surgery (for historical and logistical reasons), although it is not a surgical discipline. Other medical specialties may employ surgical procedures, such as ophthalmology and dermatology, but are not considered surgical sub-specialties per se.
Primary care medical services are provided by physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, or other health professionals who have first contact with a patient seeking medical treatment or care. These occur in physician offices, clinics, nursing homes, schools, home visits, and other places close to patients. About 90% of medical visits can be treated by the primary care provider. These include treatment of acute and chronic illnesses, preventive care, and health education for all ages.
